Hi there, I normally post on the arthritis board, and due to toxicity of the Plaquenil after 2 years, I have had to discontinue it, since I failed the visual field testing. I'm sure you do feel like you're losing your mind.(((hugs)))Pat Hi there, I had put a posting about this a few weeks ago on here.

With Plaquenil, however, the most commonly prescribed anti-malarial, this sort of damage occurs only in 1 out of 5,000 people who take the drug for five years or more. For this reason though, it is important that you see an ophthalmologist for an exam before starting to take an anti-malarial medication for your lupus. The alternative to Plaquenil is a slightly different anti malarial called Quinacrine. Plaquenil replaced Quinacrine formerly called Atabrine for anti malarial prophylaxis so now the Quinacrine has to be made up into pills or gel capsules by a compounding pharmacy. If you google you will find details of compounding pharmacies. I'm just wondering if any of you here have had to stop taking Plaquenil and if so what you replaced it with? Not knowing what your dx is, I don't know what to tell you. I haven't found a replacement except that I started my cytoxan every month now. Although I take Enbrel, and MTX, neither one work as well as the Plaquenil and the fatigue and joint pain have returned full force. I had to get off of plaquenil as well b/c of toxicity and benign tumors behind my eyes.

  3. May be I've asked this question before in some other form, but I really would like to know if there is an alternative to Plaquenil. Plaquenil was the only drug for me which gave me instantaneous better saliva flow + improved my depression within a week.

Glenn Frey's death, tied in part to rheumatoid arthritis medications he was taking, is a 'wake-up call' about the dangers of powerful drugs used to treat the condition, a top doc says. It should push arthritis patients and their doctors to seek out safer available alternatives. Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as. I had an allergic reaction to plaquenil when I was first diagnosed with lupus. My rheumatologist put me on chloroquine and I have been on that for the last 5 years. My flare ups have been minimal on the chloroquine. I do have to go for eye checks just like plaquenil. But I’ve had good luck with this so far. Maybe it’s worth a try! Goodluck.
